On Nervous System Regulation with Emilie Lassen

Our nervous system shapes so much of how we experience the world. It influences how we respond to stress, how well we sleep, digest our food, recover, connect with others, and ultimately how we move through each day. As the conversation around nervous system health continues to grow, more people are discovering that supporting the body isn't about doing more, it's about creating the conditions for balance, resilience, and lasting wellbeing.

Emilie Lassen is a holistic nutritionist and Somatic Stress Release Practitioner whose work brings together nourishment, nervous system regulation, breathwork, movement, and seasonal living. Through one-on-one coaching, workshops, and retreats, she helps people reconnect with their bodies, build sustainable daily rituals, and create meaningful, lasting change from the inside out.

We sat down with Emilie to explore what nervous system regulation really means, why it's become such an important conversation in modern wellbeing, and the simple practices we can all incorporate to feel more grounded, resilient, and connected to ourselves.

Nervous system regulation has become a central conversation in wellbeing. How would you describe it in its simplest form?

Our nervous system is our body's communication and control centre. It's constantly gathering information from both inside and outside the body and deciding how much energy should be allocated to different functions. It regulates almost everything: our heart rate, breathing, digestion, hormones, immune system, sleep, blood sugar and even how we think and feel.

At its core, the nervous system is always asking one question: "Am I safe?" What's fascinating is that this happens before we're even consciously aware of it through a process called neuroception, the nervous system's ability to detect cues of safety or danger without us having to think about it.

We spend so much of modern life rushing, multitasking and consuming information. How does this constant state of stimulation affect the body?

Many of us spend far too much of our lives in fight-or-flight mode. Our bodies weren't designed to process endless notifications, packed schedules and constant stimulation without a break.

When the brain senses stress, it prioritizes survival over optimization. Blood flow shifts away from digestion and reproductive function towards the muscles and heart. Stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline rise, while healing, digestion, hormone production and immune function become less of a priority.

The first step is becoming aware of your own unique stress response. Throughout the day, check in with your body and ask yourself: Am I buzzing? Am I clenching my jaw? Are my shoulders tight? Is my breathing shallow?

Your body gives you signals long before your mind catches up.

I encourage people to ask themselves, Am I in fight or flight right now? Am I in rest and digest? Or am I moving into shutdown?

Shutdown (sometimes referred to as the dorsal vagal state) is when we feel exhausted, disconnected, numb or overwhelmed. Learning to recognise these states without judgement is one of the most empowering things we can do!

What are some subtle signs that tell you your nervous system is asking for more support?

The signs can be incredibly subtle at first: feeling constantly tired despite sleeping, anxiety, irritability, sadness, overwhelm, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension, headaches, digestive symptoms like IBS, hormonal imbalances, poor sleep or simply feeling like you're always "on."

I often remind people that symptoms are just your body communicating.

Rather than asking, "What's wrong with me?" I encourage people to ask, "What is my body trying to tell me?"

So often our symptoms are intelligent adaptations. The body is always trying to protect us. When we begin listening instead of fighting our symptoms, everything starts to change.

Many people focus on nutrition, movement or supplementation when trying to improve their health. Why do you believe supporting the nervous system is such a fundamental place to begin?

Because the nervous system influences almost every other system in the body.

It helps regulate cortisol, blood sugar, hormones, digestion, inflammation and the immune system. If the body constantly feels unsafe, it remains focused on survival rather than healing.

I often tell clients that the body always chooses protection before performance. Before it can fix your digestion, balance hormones, support fertility, build muscle or repair tissues, it first needs to feel safe.

You can eat incredibly well, take all the supplements and exercise consistently, but if your nervous system is chronically dysregulated, it's much harder for the body to absorb nutrients, repair and recover in the way it's made to.

That's why I see nervous system support as the foundation that everything else is built upon.

You often speak about "returning to the body." What does that actually look and feel like in everyday life?

Returning to the body means moving out of constant thinking and reconnecting with sensation.

Every nervous system is unique. Something that feels stressful for one person may feel exciting for another. That's why healing isn't about following someone else's plan; it's about understanding your own patterns.

Stress isn't only something we think about; it's something we experience physically. The body can continue carrying the imprint of stressful experiences long after they've passed.

That's where somatics becomes so powerful.

Somatics is simply working with the body rather than only the mind. Through breath, movement, awareness and noticing sensations, we're allowing the body to complete stress responses that may never have had the opportunity to finish.

Sometimes the body doesn't need more thinking; it needs to be felt, moved and mobilized.

Start asking your body: Where am I tense? Where am I stuck? What does my body want to do? Does it want to move, be heard, stretch, shake or simply rest?

How do food and nourishment communicate safety to the nervous system?

This is one of my favourite questions because food is so complex—it's pure information for the body.

One of the biggest ways food communicates with the nervous system is through blood sugar stability.

Large fluctuations in blood sugar can trigger the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to bring those levels back into balance. Many people experience this as anxiety, shakiness, irritability, energy crashes or cravings without realizing it's a physiological response.

Meals that include enough protein, healthy fats and fibre help create stability, and stability is something the nervous system loves.

Certain foods, like large amounts of refined sugar, ultra-processed foods or excessive caffeine, can increase physiological stress in some people, particularly when they're already dysregulated. It's not about labelling foods as "good" or "bad," but about understanding how they make your body feel.

Even how we eat matters. When we're eating on the run, standing up, scrolling on our phones or rushing between meetings, we're sending mixed signals to the nervous system.

Slowing down, taking a breath before eating, chewing properly and allowing ourselves to actually receive nourishment sends a powerful message of safety to the body.

What role do rhythm and ritual play in creating a more regulated nervous system?

Our nervous system loves predictability.

Rhythm creates safety.

One exercise I often give people is to think back to moments where they've genuinely felt safe in their body.

Where were you?

Who were you with?

What were you doing?

How did your body feel?

Then begin building small daily rituals that recreate those feelings.

We're also not designed to regulate alone. Humans are wired for connection. Eye contact, laughter, physical touch, feeling understood and spending time with someone whose nervous system feels calm all help regulate our own nervous system. This is known as co-regulation, and it's one of the reasons relationships are such a powerful part of healing.

The rituals don't have to be big—they need to be consistent enough that your body begins to recognize them as cues of safety.

How do you know when your nervous system is beginning to feel safe again?

For me, the biggest sign is resilience.

Life isn't going to stop being stressful, and I don't think the goal is to stay calm all the time. That's neither realistic nor healthy.

A healthy nervous system is flexible. It knows how to move into stress when it's needed, but it also knows how to recover afterwards.

One of the key players in that process is the vagus nerve, the longest cranial nerve in the body. It acts like a communication highway between the brain and many of our organs, including the heart, lungs and gut. Practices like slow breathing, humming, singing, gentle movement and safe connection can all help stimulate this pathway and support regulation.

When you've built a daily practice of checking in with your body, you start recognizing what's happening much earlier. Instead of staying stuck in stress for days or weeks, you have the awareness and the tools to return to safety.

That's what resilience really is. Not avoiding stress but knowing how to come home to yourself after it.
